Copyright & Licensing
Who owns the photographs, what your print release allows, and how commercial licensing works.
Last updated: September 18, 2026
Photography is creative work, and copyright can be confusing for clients. This page explains it in plain language so everyone knows exactly what they can do with their images.
1. Who Owns The Photographs
Under United States copyright law, the photographer owns the copyright in the images from the moment they are created. Photography by Anette retains copyright in all photographs from every session. What you receive is a license to use them, which is described below.
2. Your Personal Print Release
Every session includes a personal print release. It allows you to:
- Download and keep your high resolution images
- Print them, in any size, at the lab of your choice
- Share them with family and friends
- Post them on your personal social media accounts
- Use them on personal holiday cards, announcements and invitations
- Make copies for personal use and family gifts
3. What The Print Release Does Not Allow
- Selling the images or licensing them to anyone else
- Using them to advertise, promote or sell a product or service
- Entering them into contests as your own work
- Submitting them to publications or stock agencies
- Editing, filtering, cropping or applying presets before public posting, which misrepresents the work
- Removing a watermark from any preview image
4. Commercial Licensing
If images will be used to promote a business, a commercial license is required. This applies to branding sessions, team headshots used in marketing, product images, real estate listings and any advertising use. Commercial licenses are priced by scope, including where the images will appear, for how long, and in what territory. Tell us the intended use before the session so the license can be quoted correctly.
5. Credit
Credit is not required for personal use, though it is always appreciated. When sharing on social media, tagging Photography by Anette helps other people find the work. Commercial licenses may include a credit requirement stated in the license agreement.
6. Portfolio And Marketing Use
Unless your agreement says otherwise, we may use selected images from your session in our portfolio, on this website, on social media and in marketing materials. You may opt out in writing at any time and we will stop using them publicly going forward. Images of minors are used publicly only with written parental or guardian consent.
7. Model Releases
For commercial and branding work, signed model releases may be required from everyone appearing in the images. We will provide the forms when they are needed.
8. Website Content
All images, text, layout and design on annphotography.site are protected by copyright. Reproduction, downloading or republication without written permission is not permitted.
9. Enforcement
Unauthorized commercial use of copyrighted photographs is an infringement and may result in licensing fees, statutory damages and legal costs. If you are unsure whether a use is permitted, ask first. Permission is usually simple to arrange.
